Democratic Communications Press Interns
General Description

Interning for the Michigan House of Representatives is a wonderful way to learn about state government and the legislative process.  Working specifically with the House Democratic Caucus and the Democratic Communications Department is a great way to experience first-hand the role media, communication and service play in politics.  Press Interns aid in producing, proofing and distributing press releases, speeches and columns; circulating and archiving newspapers; updating media lists; interacting with reporters and arranging, facilitating and advancing media events and press conferences.  On occasion, interns will also be asked to work for the video production coordinator, either by running cameras or editing shows.  The program is designed to give a well rounded experience, including both substantial responsibilities and support of central staff.

 
Salary Range
This is an unpaid position, but college credit is possible.  See your school’s Intern Coordinator for information.
 
Minimum Qualifications

Participants will be expected to work part-time, 10-20 hours a week, or full time, 20-30 hours a week, to be eligible to earn credit through this program, depending on their educational institution.  Prior internship experience with either news outlets or press departments within a campaign is preferred.  An intern is a reflection of the office.  We are looking for interns who are professional in demeanor and decorum.  A willingness to work hard, be punctual and dependable are a must.  Strong computer skills are helpful but not necessary. Classes may be provided to assist with further office related computer learning. An interest in state-wide politics and the legislative process is preferred for political positions.  Space is limited and carpooling is encouraged.
